Rules
In this category qualifying rounds will be conducted at scheduled milongas held throughout capital cities in Australia from May to July 2009. You and your partner gain the opportunity to dance three tangos, with a group of up to 10 couples. The selecting panel will judge your ability to perform specific salón steps. Please refer to the Qualifying
Rounds page on this website for the various locations where you may qualify.
SALON TANGO (Contest
Guidelines)
- Once a dancing couple is formed, they shall not separate as long as the music is playing. This means that they cannot break the embrace (abrazo), which is considered the tango dance position.
- For the position to be considered correct, partners must constantly hold each other by means of the embrace. Even though during certain figures the embrace may be flexible, it must never be broken, and this shall not continue during the entire piece.
- All movements shall be performed within the space allowed by the couple embrace.
- The Judging Panel shall consider musicality and walking style as the main evaluation criteria for qualification.
- Within these guidelines, dancers may perform any figures commonly used, including barridas, sacadas close to the floor, enrosques, etc.
- Ganchos, leaps,
trepadas and any other typical tango escenario (stage) choreography
are absolutely excluded.
- Couples shall constantly move counterclockwise, like in the milongas (tango dance places), and shall avoid remaining in the same choreographic place in order to avoid interrupting the dancers' circulation.
- No dancer may
raise his/her leg above the knee line.
Entry of each couple shall signify the knowledge of, and agreement to, these rules by each one of the contestants in this Championship.
